Writing Dynamic Takeaway Text in Dashboards
I’m a big fan of takeaway text: for reports, for presentations, and even for interactive dashboards.
Sometimes people think that takeaway text isn’t possible for dynamic dashboards in Excel. They worry that they’ll have to write each sentence by hand. False!
In this video, you’ll learn about two ingredients:
(1) Concatenation: You’ll use the ampersand (&) to join the content from a few cells together.
(2) Helper Cells: There are pivot tables, helper tables (with lookups), and more concatenation to write out the graph labels.
You can write takeaway sentences about:
The most or least (the poles)
The averages
Anything else you think your audience might be interested in

How to Fix Dense Maps (with Small Multiples!)
Переглядів 591Місяць тому
A good rule of thumb: If your map feels too dense... try small multiples! Before, we started with a single map... with 2 variables. Counts and rates. A bubble map on top of a heat map. After, we'll use small multiples: 2 separate maps, 1 for each variable. The headings, color-coding, takeaway sentences, bolding, and annotations will help to explain our patterns, too. 0:00 Welcome to Dataviz On ...

    • @AnnKEmery
      @AnnKEmery Місяць тому

      The "before" map was made by a health department inside... ArcGIS, maybe? Not sure. I only had the finished product, which was a 1-page PDF on their website. The "after" maps were made inside good ol' Excel, and then pasted into PowerPoint. (If you look closely, you'll see that the before/after datasets don't match. I couldn't re-create the original map since I just had the PDF. So I had to use dummy data to make the "after" versions. But, that doesn't change the fact that they're possible in Excel.)

    Very supportive of more Ann on UA-cam! At this stage in my career your coverage of less technical how-tos (though I know many still benefit from these) and more the decision making of what to include in a visualization, the best ways to engage your audience, making equitable visualization, etc. are what help me the most. Good luck!

    Could use lookup or lookup for the race ethnicity for the family with 8 kids, hnstly eyeballing might b the best because they tell u it's the only value, but maybe if they say find the race / ethnicity with the largest or smallest number of kids u could use a mix of v or xlookup and max/min to get that or large or small if they ask for the third largest or smallest number of kids

    Thanks for sharing. However, I felt the comparison with Word ("It's just blank canvas") does not do right to Word. Word has tons of templates to for specific objectives and formats. Second, thinking of inclusiveness: texts written in Powerpoint are extremely hard to understand by visually impaired colleagues, as the document in powerpoint has no clear structure and order of content. Apple Siri can't figure out Powerpoint texts easily. Third, using powerpoint makes people focused on looks and format, and it takes endless to redo formatting. Much faster and more efficient in Word.
